CBS Sports and ESPN.com have each done away with a fantasy NASCAR offering for the 2010 season.
CBS decided not to bring back its free-to-play, pick-em style Fantasy Racing Challenge. FSB.com has learned that it was a simple matter of the company directing its resources to the more popular and prominent games in sports such as baseball, football, basketball, hockey and college football.
The site also did away with Fantasy Golf Challenge for the same reason. Each was a free game and the only contest offered in its sport.
ESPN.com is going without its Fantasy Stock Car product this season, which was the commissioner-style NASCAR game. The site will continue to offer other NASCAR games, however.
Here’s what Jason Waram, vice president of fantasy games at ESPN, had to say: “We’re fully committed to fantasy NASCAR at ESPN.com, and definitely believe it will continue to grow its base of players. That said, it is a unique sport and we continue to explore what games best serve players in a way that works for our business. ESPN Stockcar Challenge has been an extremely popular game for us through the years, and we are focusing our energies on continuing to develop that game. We’ll also continue to explore what other concepts could deliver a differentiated game to fans.”
